Excel formula to compare two columns and return a value (5 examples)
※ Download: Excel match two columns and output third
I would like to be able to retrieve the result from a third column C that is based on the results in two other columns A and B. You will see a pair of 2nd brackets appear in the formula which contains the formula inside it. I'd like to do this in Excel, but I can't figure out how to have a randomly generating non-repeating macro with text values in cells.
How does this formula work? I've attached an example with the column headings I want to use. Thank you Resources saved on this page: MySQL 12.

Many Many thanks Best Wishes Phil Re: Excel-vlookups on two columns and output from third Phillip, Try fiddling with the formula. Dissect the formula in to parts, and see what each does. You can also use the Evaluate feature in the formula toolbar and see how the calculation is done in the formula. If you look at it closely, you would realize that there are basically two functions. One, INDEX, the other MATCH. Find out what INDEX and MATCH does either by going through the net, or Excel help. Once you have an understanding, try to adapt the above formula to suit your third column look up. Give it a good shot. If you are not able to reach anywhere, come back. I or any of the volunteers here will help you. But try to flee spoon feeding. Insert the MATCH function shown below. Some Excel users like using VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP; others prefer using INDEX and MATCH together. The study numbers are unique. However, I recently went into a spreadsheet to update it and was unable to select and enter data into an individual cell. Note that row 2 has evaluated as 1 and the rest have evaluated as Errors because they don't match the lookup values. What I want to do is: If Any cell in columns C, D or E is in red Then look at the corresponding cell in column B and see if there is a match to any cell in column G If There is a match Then Output 'pay' in column F in the corresponding row Else Output 'no pay' in column F in the corresponding row Else Do nothing End I hope this is clear. I'm attempting to filter columns E, G, and I all at the same time. In this formula, that is the MATCH function. Column B will have hundreds of entries but Column G will have just a limited number i. If the results in each of column A and column B for the same row is satisfied, then the corresponding result in column C is reported.
